What Role for Faculty Unions (If Any)?

The on-going controversy over public sector unions and collective bargaining in Ohio and Wisconsin has focused attention on a hotly disputed issue. Should the faculty at public colleges and universities be allowed or even encouraged to unionize? Or should unionization not be permitted? This week’s Pope Center Clarion Call brings together two advocates with sharply differing views. Arguing for faculty unionization is Cary Nelson, president of the American Association of University Professors. Arguing against is Charles Baird, retired professor of economics at California State University, East Bay.
